Advice day is a hit with visitors
Date published: 15/01/2008
Having a disability doesn't need to stop you, there's a wealth of support and advice out there. That was the message behind 'Breaking the Barriers' - an event at St Andrews United Reform Church today.
The event, organised by Rochdale Borough Council, gave people with disabilities the opportunity to ask questions and meet advisors from a variety of organisations covering employment, transport, health, housing, benefits and direct payments. It was a huge success with nearly 100 visitors.
Trudie Garner who attended said it had been really useful: "I've been able to get advice on a variety of different aspects regarding my disability including health and transport services. When I've attended similar events previously they've always just been around work and training so today has been a welcome change."
Councillor Keith Swift who spoke at the event said: "the disabled staff that work for Rochdale Council do a superb job, and many employers are realising that disabled people are reliable workers, often having less time off than so called able bodied people. It is good, not only to be able to earn a wage, but to be able to socialise with your colleagues and play a part as a member of the team that makes having a job important to the well being of people. People in work stay healthier and happier than those not in work and not getting out and about."
