Update: Schools open up as winter wonderland turns to slush

Some schools have stayed open today as Rochdale’s winter wonderland turns to slush.

Severe weather warnings were issued by the police and the council as more heavy snowfalls were predicted, but the harsh weather did not materialise and everyone woke up this morning to slush and drizzle.

Bamford Primary, Healey Primary and St Michael’s Primary School in Bamford decided to open up.

Headteacher of Healy Primary School Mrs Taylor said: “I sent a letter home last night with all the pupils to inform them that, as long as they could get in safely, the school would stay open.

“The children’s safety is what’s important but of course if that is not an issue, we don’t want their education to suffer.

“A few members of staff who live far away are still stranded but most of us live locally and we are open as normal."

Dozens of schools were forced to close their doors after a thick sheet of snow covered the borough on Tuesday and the majority of schools are closed today after the Council anticipated heavy overnight snow.
