Date published: 04/09/2005
The body of a man was found in the early hours of Sunday morning in the grounds of Rochdale Infirmary. The man had been shot in the head and police believe they now know his identity and officers are currently in the process of contacting his next of kin. However, formal identification has not yet taken place.
A spokesperson for Rochdale Infirmary said that the man's body was discovered about 400 yards from the main entrance, alongside a patch of grassland.
The body was found close to the Stonehill block of the hospital but the man is not believed to be a patient or member of staff at the Infirmary. Police have requested CCTV footage from the hospital.
Forensic detectives have investigated the scene and are satisfied following their findings, and a post mortem, that the man committed suicide.
Police are appealing for anyone with information regarding the death to come forward.
The hospital remains open as normal.
