Local reuse group opens Mother and Baby Resource Centre

A mother and baby resource centre has been opened by local group, Reuse Littleborough.

The centre is one of two shops the group runs from premises at Stevenson Square, Smallbridge, in their aim to reuse everyday items that would otherwise end up in the bin.

Michael Bamford, who runs the group, said: “We had a very informal launch where we were visited by Homestart, Surestart, Health visitors, district nurses, midwives and social services. They asked lots of questions and it seems we have found a big need locally. they left their details and promised to pass on our project to others.

“So far we have passed on lots of things and it will grow: we are finding that the need so far is for new mothers and expectant ladies, so we need prams, cots and lots of toiletries.”

The group also runs a shop to sell surplus items to the public. This is open between 10am and 4pm on Saturdays.

Michael added: “The rest of the week is by appointment only to care givers that have identified a need.

“We also have lots of plans for the summer to help others, but the priority is to find suitable premises in the right location within our extremely limited budget.”

The mother and baby resource centre currently occupies the space formerly used to store donations for a container which was recently sent to the Forever Angels Baby Home in Mwanza, Tanzania. This is the second container the group has sent to the baby home.

Michael will be travelling out to Tanzania in the near future to help unload and sort the donations when it has safely arrived.
