Year 10 Boys Football - League Match News

The boys played the first league game of the season on Tuesday, 3 October at home to Wardle on the 3G.

After a slow start and some defensive mix ups we were 2 - 0 down quite quickly.

Sean Gollop opened his account and then Joe Hoyle equalised. Alex Dixon put us in front and Joao Soares made it 4-2 before they pulled one back to make it 4 - 3 at half time.

The match see-sawed in the second half with Sean, Joe and Joao all scoring again to make it 7 - 5 with less than five minutes to go.

With it being the first match, we had six substitutes and using them all possibly affected the team as Wardle pulled one back then equalised with the last kick of the match.

A special mention of goalkeeper Matthew Eaton who played well, pulled off some great saves but is always going to concede goals in the full-size nets.

Year 10 Boys Football - Cup Match News

The boys were entertaining Middleton Tech in the Rochdale cup on Tuesday, 10 October at home on the 3G. Middleton had a very fast pupil up front and some good play by him led to their first goal.

A mistake by our centre half gifted them their second but a quick reply by Harvey Holden reduced the arrears.

Alex Dixon continued his goal a game record and equalised before half time.
Ben Huszer had made some excellent runs down the right channel and was very instrumental in us being level. Joao Soares started on a dribble, bamboozling three defenders before he was upended inside the box.

Shay Stansfield stepped up to scuff his effort in off the post leaving the keeper no chance.

Middleton equalized from a free kick when the defence went to sleep and they had a free

header six yards out.
Middleton then had another free kick on the left wing and their player will not hit a sweeter shot, it thundered against the underside of the bar, bounced behind the line and then game back into play.

Matthew did not stand a chance. In the last minutes Cuthbert's were applying lots of pressure and from a corner, Stansfield shot across goal which the keeper got down to save but he fumbled it.

Chris Fleming, who had soldiered on with a dead leg, atoned for his error earlier to equalise with the last kick of the match.

It had been agreed to go straight to penalties and Middleton were victorious 4 - 3. A special mention to Mathew Fogarty, Ben Huszer and Jordao Namamba Costa.

Caritas Ambassadors

Caritas is the collective name for the different charity projects supported by our Diocese of Salford. It is also the name of one of our school buildings at St Cuthbert's. The word caritas means love for our neighbour.

We have a growing team of Caritas Ambassadors (CA) in school who meet with Mrs Ansley, our Lay Chaplain, in their own time to learn about how they can support those in need in our region and share their learning with others. It is not always about fund-raising. Sometimes it means being the voice for the most vulnerable who are not able to help themselves.

On Thursday our CAs attended a special Caritas Market Place event at St Anne's Parish centre, Crumpsall, where they were able to learn first-hand about the valuable work Caritas carries out with the homeless; refugees; the elderly; the lonely; the hungry and many more vulnerable groups. Part of the day took the form of a treasure hunt and pupils had to speak to the representatives of each charity to be able to answer the treasure hunt questions.

We were very proud that one of our CAs, Viviana, was selected to co-host the day with Lawrence Bettany, Caritas Manager. She carried out her role very professionally and even had to interview some of the people who use the services of Caritas. Well done Viviana! All of our CAs took part in the day very enthusiastically and were interviewed for a film which is being produced to be shown in other schools to encourage them to have their own Caritas Ambassadors.

As a result of what they learned, our CAs want to raise awareness in school of refugees and the homeless in our town of Rochdale.

Year 9 Drama

Pupils in Year 9 who have opted for GCSE Drama have made a fantastic start to the year. They have been researching life in the Brazilian favelas with a particular focus on train surfers. Pupils have been building positive relationships with each other during group activities and we will be excited to see how pupils work will develop in the next few months.

Year 11 English Literature

Year 11 have been working towards their English Literature exams; they have been working hard completing revision pages to help them remember their quotations and notes for all 15 poems.
