Thieves leave a trail of coffee beans behind after targeting Hopwood Park Cabin

Date published: 08 August 2017

Thieves who targeted the newly-renovated Hopwood Park Cabin on Sunday night (6 August), left a trail of coffee beans behind them near the Victor Street entrance.

As they attempted to steal the coffee machine, the thieves also flooded the place in the process before making off with a heavy coffee grinder, a small radio and stock such as drinks, sweets and canned food.

The Friends of Hopwood Park are asking people to be vigilant if they are approached by anyone trying to sell the items.

The Friends confirmed many of the local children who regularly visit the park were extremely upset to hear about the break in.

Over the last couple of years, the Friends have been working to improve the park with the help of community grants and donations. The first phase of landscaping work, funded by a £12,000 grant from the Tesco Bags of Help scheme, began in mid-June to define and enhance the space around the cabin with a picnic area and new paths to improve disabled access.

The cabin, formerly a derelict bus shelter, officially reopened in June after being transformed to a café and community hub. Whilst the building still requires internal structuring and other repairs, The Friends are estimating things to be completed by winter 2018.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “We were called at around 8.30am on Monday 7 August 2017 to reports of a burglary at a cabin on Manchester Road, Heywood that occurred sometime between 5pm on Sunday 6 August and 8am on Monday 7 August.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
