St Chad’s and St George’s - Places of Welcome

Date published: 22 March 2017

Two Rochdale churches, St Chad’s and St George’s are joining together in a scheme to provide friendship, hospitality and free refreshments.

‘Places of Welcome’ is a nationwide network run by community groups who want to make sure that everyone who needs it has somewhere to go for a cup of tea and a conversation.

On Thursdays between 12noon and 1.00pm visitors to St Chad’s, at the top of the steps from the Town Hall, can gather together for lunch.

“It’s so simple, but so important” says the Revd Mark Coleman. “We are very proud of our friendly lunch. Each week we have good conversations and offer a friendly listening ear.”

St George’s opens its doors every Tuesday from 10.30am – 11.30am for light refreshments.

“Isolation is a growing problem in society” said The Revd Karen Smeeton “and St George’s and St Chad’s want to make sure that we are there for people who simply want to meet up with other people. We’re open to anyone of any faith or no faith”.

St Chad’s has offered a Place of Welcome since summer 2016 and has received many hundreds of guests. On 9 March they welcomed Councillor Janet Emsley to lunch. She spoke about the importance of well-being and good friendly relationships in the area.

On Tuesday 28 March the Mayor will be dropping in at St George’s ‘Place of Welcome’ formally to open their scheme.

Both Places of Welcome have been funded by the Church of England Council for Social Aid and contributions from St Chad’s and St George’s.
