Purple crocuses, brighten up Lane Head and promote the End Polio Now campaign

The Catley Lane Head community has planted crocuses to brighten up the area around the BBC Plaque, commemorating the Rochdale Millworkers during the Cotton Famine, and the entrance to the village.

They also wanted to support the Rotary’s latest campaign, Purple4Polio, which is designed to raise awareness of the End Polio Now campaign by planting purple crocus.

A spokesperson for Rooley Moor Neighbourhood Forum said: “We are always keen to see our area looking its best and are all looking forward to seeing the results of our labour when the crocuses to flower.

“Also, Rotary and its members have been committed to fighting to eradicate polio across the world for over 30 years. The amount of polio-endemic countries has dropped from 125 to just three, with over 2.5 billion children receiving vaccinations thanks to the help of Rotary.”

The purple crocus is a symbol of Rotary’s worldwide campaign to eradicate polio, with its colour representing the purple dye used to mark the finger of a child who has been immunised.

Keeping track of those that have been vaccinated in some of the remote villages of India, Pakistan and other countries is very difficult and this marking of the finger was seen to be the easiest and best way to keep track.
