Gordon's Alive and he's coming to Rochdale

Date published: 19 November 2015

In June 2016 Dale-Con, Rochdale's science fiction convention, will return for its biggest event yet.

The convention was born in 2013 from an idea by the then Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre Manager Martin Ballard in a bid to increase the footfall in the shopping centre.

Martin said: "'It was clear at the time there was an opportunity to bring like-minded people together to have an event that's really good natured, and bring spend to the local shops and evening economy."

Over 16,000 people went through the centre on the two weekends it was held - over a 60% increase in footfall.

The event was held up at Spotland Stadium in 2015. The football stadium was a grand spectacle but it ran at its capacity throughout the day, and was a little out on a limb for those who were coming from further afield.

Martin knew he had to make 2016 bigger and better as the demand for it is strong in Rochdale.

He explained that the name Dale-Con came both from the fact it was the town's name shortened but also that it was Flash Gordon's girlfriend in the film, and that's what the event's logo pays homage to.

Martin explained: "With Life After Flash coming out in 2016, and following the lives of the actors from the original film, it made perfect sense to push out the boat and sign an exclusive deal with both Sam J Jones and Melody Anderson, and what better venue to have it in than in the Town Hall."

There are lots more details to be revealed but Dale-Con 4 will take over the Town Hall for the weekend and promises to provide something special on the middle night of the event that will leave people talking for a long time to come.

Traders interested in booking on the event should contact Martin at Red Cape Marketing directly as should anyone with a sci-fi talent, interest or simply something to bring along to make Dale-Con 4 something really special.
