The Royal Toby restaurant is being refurbished with Victorian grandeur

The Royal Toby Hotel, which is set in a historical manor house, is currently undergoing a complete restaurant and bar refurbishment, with the theme of Victorian grandeur.

Set in the suburb of Castleton, the Deckers Group venue also has a 53-bedroom hotel and dedicated banqueting suite called The Rhyddings Suite. The restaurant and bar closed on Monday, January 9 and will re-open on Monday, February 6. However, the hotel and Italian restaurant Cenetta both remain open for business during the restaurant renovation.

Managing director of the Deckers Group Max Brierley said: “It’s been a fantastic experience to research the history of this spectacular Victorian residence, which has inspired our current renovations.

“I chose the theme of Victorian grandeur to emulate what the building could have looked like when it was first built and decorated, yet still incorporating a touch of modern elegance.

“The designs and interiors have been managed by Sam Tinsley at Tinsley Wood Interior Design. She has an excellent working relationship with our senior management team at Deckers, and an exceptional eye for detail, so we’re incredibly happy to be working with her again.”

The previous burgundy interiors were created in 2002 and are now being carefully removed, while the stunning chandeliers have been temporarily taken down to be deep cleaned. In true Victorian style, the interiors will feature lots of pattern such paisley, as well as greenery and botanical imagery.

Within the main restaurant, the dome is being re-painted and three Victorian portraits are being etched into the windows. The bar area is also being completely re-decorated with wood floors, a Chesterfield sofa, with strong patterned wallpaper used in the side rooms.

Additionally, The Study, which is used for civil wedding ceremonies, is also being redecorated to feel lighter with new carpets, curtains and wall coverings.

The Royal Toby hotel and restaurant was originally a manor house called The Rhyddings, which was built at the turn of the century by businessman Ernest Tweedale. He later added on the magnificent ballroom, which is now the restaurant dining room.

Ernest was the son of Samuel Tweedale, one of the founders of engineering giants Tweedale and Smalley. The family were popular in the area and believed in free trade and hard work, and created a huge amount of employment for local families.
