Leigh 68 - 18 Rochdale Hornets

Date published: 16 April 2012

Leigh ran riot in a crushing win over Hornets in the fourth round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup.

Hornets were with without a couple of key players yet there were times in the first period where they showed some of the form that had given them such a good start in Championship One. With Chris Hough always seeking an opening and Steve McDermott lively off the bench they made Leigh work hard for every first half point.

Hornets showed they were not to be dismissed when substitute Stephen Lucas took McDermott’s pass to go under the posts for a Baines goaled try, however, the Cup winners at Wembley in 1971, established a 26-12 half-time lead.

There was no way back in the second half for Hornets, with Ryan Brierley, who is on loan to Leigh from Castleford, providing the highlight with a three tries to add to his one in the first half.
